Tell us about yourselves & how you got to where you are today! Trudy was born and raised in Piqua, Ohio, though people are often surprised I’m not a born and bred Southern belle. I currently lead Huff Harrington Design as Lead Designer, where I bring a refined design sensibility, thoughtful approach, and a little optimism to every project. Before fully stepping into interiors, I honed my spacial design skills through l leadership roles with brands including Gap, Spanx, and Serena & Lily. Frequent trips to France – where I assist with international design projects and installations – have shaped my signature approach: blending old and new with a playful, unexpected twist. Outside the office, you’ll often find me strolling Chastain Park with my handsome Lab, Beau, or enjoying a lively dinner out with my husband, glass of bubbly in hand. Emma Caroline Lee has spent years with Huff Harrington honing her eye through countless design projects. Prior to that she tackled the world of luxury PR launching fine art, fashion and hospitality brands in Atlanta. While her heart lies with traditional themes she loves to create a mix and to elevate designs through fabrics and custom pieces, building a story around our clients’ existing furnishings. Her love of classic and traditional design is a perfect complement to the Huff Harrington mix of antique and modern. When she’s not designing, you can find her spending time with her adorable young family or traveling. One of the most meaningful parts of our work is connecting with clients. We take the time to really listen, understand their stories and the pieces they love, and translate their vision into spaces that feel personal, sophisticated, and always chic. You recently selected 2 Twin Claremont Beds - Charles with a fabulous brushed fringe. Walk us through the design process! One of the elements that grounded the design of the room from the very beginning was a fabulous imported antique settee we found in the South of France. Its sassy curves immediately set the tone, so it was important for us to find bed frames that echoed that curvy softness – the Charles did just that. As with any successful space, the devil is in the details. We had the most fun marrying the bed frames and settee through coordinating fabrics - ultimately choosing a stripe for the beds to bring in a tailored note. To soften the structured stripe - and of course adding a touch of unexpectedness - we finished the headboards with a brushed fringe trim from Samuel & Sons. Layered against the Farrow & Ball high-gloss walls, the subtle movement and texture was the perfect final touch, elevating the beds while tying the entire room together beautifully. The Claremont bed - Charles How would you describe your style? Classic at its core, with a deep reverence for both contemporary and antique influences. You have a design branch in both Atlanta and Paris. Do you often try to incorporate European influences throughout your design projects in the US? It truly works both ways – we’re constantly inspired by both sides of the pond. That said, there’s something especially compelling about incorporating a piece of French history into our state-side projects. A beautiful European antique has an effortless way of adding depth, soul and a bit of “crunch” when layered into a modern or traditional home. We always aim for a home that feels classic and lived-in. If you had to pick one, what is your favorite project to date? That’s a difficult question, as each project is deeply personal to each client. Knowing their story, understanding the heirlooms they cherish, and creating designs that reflect their lives make every project meaningful in its own way. What aspect of Parisian lifestyle do you adopt in your everyday life? I’ve always admired the ease of the French lifestyle – lingering over meals, choosing quality over quantity, and treating everyday rituals as small indulgences. And of course, there’s the skincare… a daily reminder that a good cream can, in fact, solve almost everything! What’s a wallpaper or fabric you are dying to use in a project? Tough question because there are so many that are on our radar but I recently stumbled across the most adorable wallpaper by Jordan Connelly that would be the perfect addition to a family vacation home. Favorite coffee table book? Well, at the moment , we are gushing over the most recent Atlanta Homes & Lifestyle magazine because Huff Harrington Design made the cover! Treat Stains ASAP Coffee in bed is our favorite way to start the day! Spilling coffee on our bed...not so much. No worries though, because it is an easy fix. Treat stains immediately using a water-free solvent, like The Laundress Stain Solution! Minerals in water could possibly leave unwanted rings around the stain. Don’t Overstuff the Washer Washing your sheets alone is key in prolonging their lifespan. We know throwing everything in at once is time saving, but avoid overstuffing the washing machine with towels and clothes. You may risk snags from zippers along with color bleeding. Here is the Cliffs Notes version: I grew up in Coral Gables, Florida. At 21, I moved to San Francisco to help roll out the Old Navy concept for Gap brands, working in visual merchandising. Ultimately, I became VP of Creative Services and Visual Merchandising with Victoria Secret (lived in Columbus and NYC) before landing in Nashville with my husband Benjamin in 2003. We launched a brief retail business which led to the creation of Pencil + Paper Co in 2012! I manage a team that is focused on creating a lifestyle brand through product design, brand collaborations (we launched our collection with Anthropologie earlier this year and have some more very exciting collabs coming soon!), and social connection through P+P Creative Club. We cannot wait to host our first Creative Club event July 16-18th in Charleston, and we're already counting down the days until we can connect with this amazing community of women in person! Tell us all about Pencil + Paper Co. and how it has evolved into what it is today! As the brand has grown and evolved so has our team! I can't stress enough how important it is to have the right people in place and strong leadership. We continue to try new things and evolve brand strategy based on long term goals. We have edited out more of the service-based offerings (residential interiors) to focus on our lifestyle brand goals. We continue to evolve, based on long term growth, what our audience wants, and what feels right for the brand. I think the visual thread that runs through everything that we do is our love of color and pattern and design that brings joy. We are always thinking about what connects our community of smart, passionate, and creative women and have loved using our P+P Creative Club Happy Mail box to share our favorite things and brands with our audience on an ongoing basis. What's one piece of advice you have for someone starting their own venture? Dare to begin! Start your dream job or company ASAP. Time passes far too quickly, so find a community that pushes you to reach your goals! For us, that community has been the women we have connected with through Creative Club. You are a true lover of color + pattern. Whether it’s through your wardrobe or your home, you always bring the bright and cheery hues! What are your favorite colors at the moment? What about favorite prints? We always love a classic red, white, and blue color palette, especially for the summer! And of course, we can never get enough pattern! (Ikat, stripes, ginghams, florals) I picked up a pretty chinoiserie cabinet in the prettiest shade of yellow and knew that it would find a spot somewhere in our home. Then, I happened to stumble upon an amazing, super sized vintage yellow lamp, and voila a color palette was born! Next, I painted the room Soar Blue by Sherwin Williams on a total whim without sampling the paint color first (which typically I don't recommend), but sometimes you’re in a rush to get something checked off your list and you take a chance. I fell in love with the whimsical scallops of the Monarch Crown Bed and instantly knew this would complete the space! I chose to use this pretty, Como, Robin's Egg because even if I ultimately repaint the walls or wallpaper them- I know that a blue linen has so much versatility, and we will love it for years to come! Finally, we added the perfect touch of texture and nod to the islands with this relaxed sisal rug from Shop Rush House (and you know we love to support female owned businesses). Designing the nursery for our little Milla was one of my favorite home projects so far. I wanted the bones of the room to be gender neutral, but I also wanted it to have a subtle touch of girly flair. The original wallpaper I chose ended up being out of stock, so I pivoted last minute and settled on a whimsical light blue wallpaper from House of Hackney. In order to make it a little sweeter, I painted the trim and ceiling a high gloss pink from Farrow & Ball. Paint is always an easy way to elevate design, and seamless to change in the future. If we happen to have a boy, I can absolutely change the paint in this room and keep the wallpaper. Once I picked the wallpaper, I started working on the furniture and draperies. We opted for two Nash Swivel Gliders in Belgian Linen, Optic White so that my husband and I could both have a place to sit. The height of the arms on the Nash Swivel provide great support while feeding, and the easy-to-wash slipcover makes cleaning a breeze! We placed a pouf in between the two chairs and it couldn't be more comfortable! For the draperies and pouf I used a beautiful wool we sourced while in Germany. Hopefully we will be able to offer it at Coley Home soon! The draperies were made by a seamstress who lives in my Dad's hometown. Don't forget, our material shop is an incredible resource for high quality cut yardage at an affordable price. Milla's crib is one of my favorite pieces in the room! I had been eyeing the "invisible crib" made by a popular designer in the US, and ended up finding a similar version overseas. We are hoping to launch a small acrylic collection in the future! What do y'all think? Once all the big ticket items were finalized, I purchased a mirror, shelves, and the sweetest rocking lamb from Restoration Hardware was a must-have!
